Ankama Announces Newest Title: WAVEN - A Cozy F2P Deckbuilding Game for PC and Mobile

Ankama, the French transmedia studio behind popular MMOs Dofus and Wakfu, has announced its upcoming title WAVEN, set to launch later this year on Windows PCs, Macs, iOS, and Android. WAVEN describes itself as "a cozy tactical deck-building RPG" featuring a unique art style and a poignant message about climate change (eyeroll).

The game is set in a flooded world where only a few islands remain, with players taking on the role of seafaring adventurers searching to uncover the reasons behind this calamity. WAVEN will be Ankama's first global game release, building on the studio's successful history in Europe with Dofus and Wakfu, both of which have spawned animated series and other transmedia content.

WAVEN combines adventure and turn-based strategy, drawing inspiration from the best tactical RPGs while incorporating deck-building mechanics and collectible items. Players can embark on their journey alone or with friends, facing off against increasingly challenging monsters and mastering the elements to cast powerful spells and summon mythical companions.

Players can also defend their "Haven Island" from other players' attacks or enter the "Kolossium" to challenge others and become a legend themselves. Early access to WAVEN is expected this summer, with a worldwide free-to-play release slated for late 2023. Co-published by Ankama and New Tales, WAVEN will be a cross-platform adventure, allowing players to switch between platforms using the same account.

WAVEN seems to be Ankama's attempt at breaking into the digital CCG space which is currently dominated by Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering Arena, and Marvel Snap. The game will offer both PvP and co-op PvE content.
